B. oleracea is like the other Brassica species a well known Brassica species. İt forms the so called U triangle with the Brassica species
B. rapa, B. nigra, B. juncea, B.carinata and B. napus. Genotypes derived from Brassica species arised as the most important edible oil
resources all over the world due to developments in breeding and growing techniques. İnvestigations in different Brassica species
regarding low erucic acid content led to the discovery of low erucic acid mutants in the species B. rapa (AA), B. napus (AACC) and
Brassica juncea (AABB). Such mutants were discovered in the amphidiploid species B. carinata (BBCC) still at the beginning of the
1990’s. Up to now, such mutants were not detected in the species B. nigra. Low erucic acid mutants were discovered in B. oleracea at the
end of 1990’s. These genotypes were crossed with B. rapa genotypes with the aim to develop 0 quality resynthesized rapeseed (B. napus
L.). As the progenitor of rapeseed diploid cabbages are very useful as basic breeding material in the improvement of rapeseed. The
possible use of low erucic acid cabbages in rapeseed breeding was discussed.
