Drought is one of the most important environmental factors limiting agricultural production in many countries of the world. Insufficient and/or irregular rainfall and high temperature through year are the main factors causing drought. Among all research efforts (irrigation and other agronomic practices) to minimize the drought, breeding is one of the most important way to increase drought resistant varieties. However unless its parameters are better understood, it is difficult to improve the effectiveness of these efforts. In this review, the effects of drought at different locations and at different plant growth stages, and the selection criteria used in breeding of cereals for drought tolerance and agronomic process reduces the drought damage, were discussed.
