Abstract

In this review, it is to be purpose to pull together from knowledges regarding of protozoans in freshwaters. The members of the Protista inhabit in many various habitats. They live in marine, fresh-water and all moist habitats including bodies of other organisms. Protozoa are unicellular, phagotrophic organisms. 16 phyla of protists contain free living freshwater protozoans species. The most of them feed on bacteria, while some absorbe dissolved organic matters occuring during bacterial purification. Protozoa play an important role microbial food web and in the purification organically polluted waters. Furthermore, they also may use as indicator organisms of the performance of water–treatment plants, and the pollution and eutrophication of the natural waters. Freshwater protozoans species
are probably ubiquitous. Many may persist locally for long periods in a cryptic state and, in this situation it is mentioned as potential rather than active biodiversitiy.
