It is important to utilize and preserve the natural and cultural values of the rural areas in rural tourism with an understanding
of sustainability. Rural areas are being offered to tourism for the purpose of rural development. In contrast to the intention of
offering these areas to tourism with a sustainable understanding, rural areas that have been offered to tourism are moving away
from their natural appearance and cultural structure and becoming more commercialized. Herein, a dilemma arises with the
question whether rural areas should be used for touristic purposes or not. Within this context, the study focuses on Sille village
sample in Selçuklu district of Konya province. Tourism potential of the village and the changes in the village after being offered
to tourism have been mainly focused on. In the study, firstly the related literature was searched and the tourism values of the
rural areas and Sille village were specified. The reason of the tourism development occurred in the village and the potential were
researched. Sustainable rural tourism applications were addressed and this sustainable rural tourism issue was discussed under
using-preserving dilemma. Different from the other studies conducted on rural tourism, this study approaches the tourism and
rural tourism issues from a critical perspective under using-preserving dilemma and examines how tourism in general can be
achieved by preserving the natural and socio-cultural environment.
