Development of novel cultivars with the ability to adapt changing environmental conditions as well as consumer demands is an
important challenge. Classical breeding approaches have been used in many plant species for the improvement of several agronomic
characters such as productivity, quality aspects, resistance to pests, diseases and unfavourable environmental factors. However, classical
approaches are usually time consuming and labour intensive therefore, involvement of molecular approaches accelerate breeding programs.
Recently, great amount of genomic information and resources provided by Next Generation Sequencing Technologies is now available for
many species. In the present review, current molecular approaches and applications in breeding programs for the development of improved
novel cultivars have been evaluated.
