Abstract

The Feijoa a fruit species from Myrtaceas family and known as “Kaymak” tree in Turkey is originated from South America and naturally grows
in Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and New Zealand. Owing to its beneficial effects on human health, the Feijoa is commercially cultivated and
used in USA, Australia, Russia, Israel and some European countries outside its natural habitat. The plant species having a wide range of use
was introduced to our country through Yalova Horticultural Research Institute in 1980 at where the adaption trials have been conducted. The
saplings propagated in Yalova Horticultural Research Institute were distributed into Marmara region, into Adana province through Çukurova
University, into Mersin province through Alata Horticultural Research Institute and into Antalya province through Citrus Research Institute
where adaptation trials were set to start. With the help these distributions small scale orchards for Feijoa fruit have been conducted but not in
large scale. Owing to its nutritive field by nutritional value and its medicinal and pharmacological field by biochemical contents, although not in
our fruit consumption custom, Feijoa will have a potential to mention itself in upcoming years. Adaption trials and completred cultivar selection
studies of Feijoa within in the shortest possible time are necessary for our country’s fruit cultivation and commercialization.
