Abstract

Culture of opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.) integral part of the traditional life style of Turkish farmer has strategic importance.
It is reported by several authors that sowing, production and sale of poppy was done as an important crop plant as industrial crop cultivated
in Anatolia and Asia Minor 3000 years BC before it was known in other areas of the world. Seeds and capsules with high economic
importance are the two products of poppy, which have wide use both in the world and in our country. Morphine, codeine are the major
products obtained from the capsules, the seeds have 45-54% oil, 20-30% protein increase it importance for use in foods. Moreover, the
seeds are an important source of Vitamin E and are rich in fibre and lecithin. Additionally, the seeds are used as a snack, and in preparation
of muffin, pita bread and baked goods in many regions. Besides its usage in human diet, after extracting oil from seeds, seed cakes are
used for feeding dairy cattle or beasts of labor. This study reviews the use of poppy as food in our country and all over the world through
ages.
