Abstract

For an organism, reproduction is the only way of transmitting its genes to the next generations. Because of the
inter-sexual competition to access the potential mates and intra-sexual selection of mates equipped with desired
traits are the factors that limit the number of successful individuals achieving this aim. As a result of competition
and mate choose, genetic structure of populations may chance and frequency of some phenotypes may increase
or decrease. There are theories to describe the genetic and non-genetic mechanism of sexual selection. Among
these theories, Fisher’s runaway process, Zahavi’s indicator model, and sensory explanation models are the
genetic explanations of the phenomena, considering the affect of the preferred trait to the mating success, genetic
quality of the offspring and sensory system, respectively. Because mate chose is a complicated process that
includes non-genetic factors, effects of social interaction, cultural transmission and learning were also pointed
out in studies with a variety of organisms.
